Waklert

Common use

Waklert (armodafinil) is primarily used to manage excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder, and belongs to the group of CNS (central nervous system) stimulants. It has also been used off-label for managing conditions like ADHD, chronic fatigue syndrome, and major depressive disorder.

Dosage and direction

Take Waklert exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Waklert is usually taken 1 time a day. Waklert is usually taken each morning to prevent daytime sleepiness, or 1 hour before the start of a work shift to treat work-time sleep disorders. Waklert is usually given for up to 12 weeks. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Precautions

Waklert may reduce your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Dizziness and blurred vision may occur, do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
Waklert is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless necessary and only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the foetus. Consult your doctor before using this medicine while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Caution is advised in patients with a history of psychiatric disorders including depression and psychosis.
Patients with cardiovascular disease should also use Waklert with caution as it can cause increases in heart rate and blood pressure.

Contraindications

Waklert is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to modafinil, armodafinil or any of its inactive ingredients.
It is also contraindicated in individuals with a history of left ventricular hypertrophy or in those with mitral valve prolapse who have experienced the mitral valve prolapse syndrome.

Possible side effect

Side effects of Waklert: Headache; Nausea; Dizziness; Insomnia; Anxiety.

Drug interaction

Waklert can interact with strong CYP3A4/5 inhibitors (like ketoconazole and itraconazole), hormonal contraceptives (like ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone) and CYP2C19 substrates (such as omeprazole, diazepam, propranolol and phenytoin).

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses.

Overdose

An overdose of Waklert may cause symptoms such as restlessness, agitation, anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, diarrhea, tremors and palpitations. Immediate medical attention should be sought if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Waklert at room temperature between 68° to 77°F (20° to 25°C) away from moisture and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
